Mina Abouzahra is a designer and furniture maker specialized in Moroccan crafts. Growing up in two worlds — the Netherlands and Morocco — has informed her work and inspired her signature style.
Having worked in the Moroccan carpet industry as a designer for more than 9 years, Abouzahra has an acute awareness of the disadvantaged position of women artisans. The popularity of Moroccan rugs has grown exponentially in recent years, and is one of the country’s strongest and most lucrative exports yet the weavers, who are the artists of these creations, are some of the lowest paid in the supply chain.
Morocco has an incredible range of heritage crafts but many of these are at risk of disappearing. Abouzahra believes that if women are educated about the value of their craft, their position as custodians of tradition, and are able to demand better compensation, their heritage would have a greater chance of surviving the next few decades and beyond. www.minaabouzahra.com
